How many of us invest in something high quality, something beautiful, or something luxurious – something we have worked and saved hard for, lusted after, and finally bit the bullet and bought – only to keep it for ‘good wear’?

To keep it for the few times we go somewhere special, for the times we go to a show with our horses, or for a lesson offsite?
But for the majority of the time we spend with our horses, our day to day, we keep those special items hidden away. Instead, we use our older saddlepads, our scruffier jackets, our more battered bridles.
I do this too – because I want to show up looking my best and feeling confident when I leave the yard, and those special items I’ve bought help me do that. And by minding them and using them less often, they’ll last longer and stay special.
But I also think, if this year has taught me anything, that life is short and you never know what’s around the corner. Shows and lessons are being cancelled, and chances to go ‘somewhere special’ are now few and far between. Plans are disrupted, and the weeks and months ahead are unpredictable.
Our lives are being spent in the ‘day to day’ – at home, with our horses. And in the midst of the chaos happening in the world right now, never have so many of us felt so grateful for something so simple as spending time with our horses, going for a hack with friends, or riding at home.
In my eyes, that makes our day to day pretty special.
And special deserves the ‘good wear’.
So this year, let’s crack out the ‘good wear’ and wear it at home. Let’s break out the shiny saddlepads, the sparkly bridles, and the stunning coats – and enjoy the experience of looking and feeling our best at home.
It doesn’t have to be everyday. But every now again, do it for you.
Every now and again, make the day to day special.
Wear the good stuff.
